What this solves / who it's for
Most "Japan trip cost" articles give you a single number ("$150 per day!") and don't tell you what's in or out. This calculator breaks daily spending into the actual line items travelers face — lodging, food, local transport, attractions, miscellaneous — and lets you pick the city and travel style. Tokyo and Kyoto are not the same price; a business hotel and a capsule hotel are not the same price; a konbini dinner and an omakase dinner are not the same price. The unique feature is the "what shocks Western travelers" sidebar, which surfaces the unusual price gaps (vending machine drinks vs bar drinks, convenience-store dinner vs sit-down, capsule vs business hotel, ryokan vs Western hotel). Best for: travelers setting a realistic total budget for the trip and wanting to plan which lines to splurge on.
Estimate your daily Japan budget
How to interpret the result
The "per day" total is your expected cost per 24 hours, excluding long-distance intercity travel (Tokyo↔Kyoto Shinkansen) and major one-offs (ryokan with kaiseki). The line-item bars show where the money goes — typically lodging dominates the mid-range and luxury budgets, while food dominates the budget category. The "what shocks Western travelers" table is intentionally honest about which convenience-store or vending-machine choices save you money without sacrificing quality. Compare the per-day total against your own expected total trip length to get the trip budget.
Pro tips & common pitfalls
- • Lunch sets (teishoku) at restaurants are typically 30–40% cheaper than the same dishes at dinner — eat your big meal at midday.
- • Vending machine coffee is ¥120–180. Starbucks is ¥450+. Convenience-store onigiri is ¥120 vs ¥700+ for the same rice ball at a souvenir shop.
- • Tax-free shopping has a ¥5,000 minimum, and the queue often eats the savings — only worthwhile above ¥15,000.
- • Long-distance intercity (Shinkansen, night bus, domestic flight) is a separate budget line — budget ¥8,000–15,000 per long-distance day.
- • Tips are not expected. The line item "service / tip" should be ¥0, not 15%.

Known limitations
Daily costs assume 2024–2026 yen levels and current accommodation availability. Peak-season rates (sakura week, autumn koyo week, Golden Week) can add 30–100% to lodging — apply the seasonal factor honestly. The calculator doesn't model JR Pass economics (use JR Pass Break-Even for that). It also doesn't model shopping, souvenirs, or major one-offs — budget those separately as "trip extras." It assumes one traveler per room; couples splitting a double pay roughly the same lodging cost but spread it across two people.
